Why GratisGIS
Why I built this
I have been doing GIS full time since the mid 1990s. For most of that time I have worked around people who share what they know instead of hoarding it to stay useful, and that rubbed off on me. It is most of the reason this exists.
GratisGIS is where a lot of that experience ended up. The ideas I picked up, the problems I kept running into, the things commercial portals never quite got right. I wanted to put it somewhere other people could use it, learn from it, or build on it.
I know everyone has to make a living, myself included, and I am not knocking that. Money just is not what drives me here. I am curious, I like building things, and I like sharing them.
This gets built on nights, weekends, and lunch breaks. I have kids, a full time job, and a life, so it gets the time I can give it. If it is useful to you, good. If you have feedback or ideas, that is the kind of thing I will actually act on. If you want to write some code with me, get in touch.
Either way, it is what the name says. Gratis. Free.
